Prole Road Urbanisation
About the project
We are completing a $23.5 million upgrade of Prole Road, from Ōmokoroa Road to Waipapa River. As a result, Prole Road will be transformed from a rural road to one fit for a future as a busy urban environment.
This upgrade will enable to development of more than 2500 homes on Prole Road, as well as providing safe and functional infrastructure to support the future town centre and schools.
Higgins was awarded the contract, with construction starting in February 2023 and expected to be complete in late 2024/early 2025.
The project includes the reconstruction of 1.7km of road, new shared walking/cycling paths on both sides of the road, on-road cycle lanes for experienced cyclists, safe pedestrian crossings, and six new intersections. Of note, a dual-lane roundabout will be built at the intersection of Prole and Ōmokoroa roads.
Additional infrastructure is also included, such as water and wastewater mains, power, fibre, stormwater, new street lightings and landscaping.
To support the development, Council is also investing in open spaces and walking and cycling connections within Ōmokoroa, including a large open space area at the corner of Prole and Ōmokoroa roads which we envisage will become a wonderful central point for the community.
Funding
The project is part of the bundle of ‘shovel ready’ projects in the $14 million package allocated in the Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP) funding for Ōmokoroa.
Council is funding $16m of the project, with the remaining $7.5 coming from this CIP funding.
What to expect next
- Higgins will start construction in February 2023.
