Ōmokoroa Railway Pedestrian/Cycleway Bridges
About the project
Two standalone pedestrian bridges have been constructed by HEB Construction adjacent to the existing Ōmokoroa Road bridge over the railway line. The bridges provide safe pedestrian access across the railway line, something the existing road bridge lacks.
The eastern side bridge is a 3-metre-wide shared pedestrian and cycle path. It will also accommodate light vehicle movement if required during an emergency. The western side bridge is a 1.8-metre-wide pedestrian and cycle path only, linking the path in Kayelene Place with a new path being constructed on Ōmokoroa Road toward the Settlers Hall.
The pedestrian footpath/cycleway from the Kaimai Views roundabout to Tralee Street has also been designed to provide better walking and cycling facilities on the western side of Ōmokoroa Road and to complement the eastern side of the road.
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council contract for this project was worth $1.2 million, and physical works commenced in February 2021. The project was completed in August 2021.
What to expect next:
- There will be some minor adjustments to the northern side of the bridge to allow for better cyclist movements.
