Prole Road to Pahoia Cycleway
About the project
Update: The trail is still being constructed and is not yet ready for people to use.
This project will see a new shared path and suspension bridge across Waipapa Stream. When complete, the trail will allow people to ride or walk from Ōmokoroa to Pahoia, without having to navigate State Highway 2.
The project is being funded by Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Pirirākau hapū have also supplied designs for the cultural displays and design acknowledging the history of the area.
Council thanks the neighbouring property owners, KiwiRail, Ngāti Hauā and Pirirākau hapū, whose support was crucial in getting the cycleway off the ground.
The new suspension bridge is near completion but remains closed until trail connections are finished and land access agreements are concluded – this may take several more months to conclude. We will soon be installing new balustrade panels onto the bridge with designs gifted from Pirirākau Hapū.
The trail is expected to be completed later in 2022.
Note: There is no parking available on Prole Road or Pahoia Roadand the trail at the end of Prole Road, is private property and monitored by CCTV.
What to expect next:
- The trail through to Pahoia Road is still a work in progress and not yet ready for use.
- The trail will be opened later in 2022 once all access agreements are in place and construction works are completed.
