Cooney Reserve
About the project
Wastewater and water services for a new public toilet near the Cooney Reserve car park have recently been included and installed as part of the Ōmokoroa Road Urbanisation project.
Improvements have been also completed for the cycleway that runs through reserve. The cycleway has been realigned to include two new paths that improve the flow and allow riders and walkers to pass through the reserve without having to go through the car park. The new trail section coming down the hill has now been chip sealed to provide a better experience for cyclists as well as reduce maintenance costs.
We are also working with a local community group "Friends of Cooney" to improve the natural environment and encourage more native bird life at the reserve. Their work has included new plantings and removal of pests.
A Kuaka (godwit bird) sculpture was also installed by the Ōmokoroa Public Arts Group.
What to expect next:
- A new toilet block is planned for construction in late 2022, along with new seating, bike stands and a repair station for bikes.
- New signage will be installed.
