What's happening?
Te Puke is growing and so are the demands on Council’s infrastructure including treatment and disposal of wastewater. In May 2019, Council was granted a resource consent to continue operating the Te Puke Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for another 35 years.
One of the conditions offered by Council was to investigate alternative disposal options from the current discharge to the Waiari Stream. Exploring alternative disposal options could result in cultural, environmental and financial benefits.
The Council established a Wastewater Advisory Group (WWAG) and progressed the alternative disposal options assessment while the resource consent application was being processed.
The WWAG have identified and agreed three preferred types of alternative disposal - a constructed wetland, irrigation to farmland or to forestry. The WWAG have also identified several sites around Te Puke where these disposal types could be accommodated.
The next stage of the project is to talk to the owners of the identified sites and determine if they wish to agree to on-site investigations. These investigations will help Council to understand whether the sites are suitable for the proposed disposal option.
