Catchment Projects: Ōtawhiwhi, Bowentown, Pio Shores

The stormwater network at Bowentown was installed in 1970’s and was based on low impact design principals.

The area relies on soakage through the swale system and an open drain through Ōtawhiwhi Marae for gravity. At the time it was constructed there was very little or no understanding of maintenance required, which has led to a poor performing system.

Council has subsequently built five pump stations to drain the area to the dunes to alleviate flooding issues. Recently two of the pump stations have been upgraded.

A series of future upgrades have been planned to help flooding in this catchment. The target focus for upgrades is aligned with Council's Level of Service - to protect habitable floors from flooding in a 1 in 10 year event.

Projects Council has committed to complete by July 2024.

Basins Maintenance Soakage basins require scouring to break up firm sand which inhibits soakage in the dunes at Bowentown. The basins have now been scoured to ensure water can drain through the dunes.
Clearance Regrading of Bowentown Open Drain Network Improve flows through to Otāwhiwhi drain. Improvement to the open drains will be undertaken in conjunction with the upgrade to the Otawhiwhi drain and wider Pio Shores work.

Projects Council has committed to progressing to detailed design.

Otāwhiwhi Drain Initial concept of a box culvert extending into the harbour with some other erosion protection and stormwater treatment, will help hapu reclaim some land and improve flow and water quality. Initial meeting with Marae complete. Concept design is now complete and with Marae for feedback.
On Call Pumps with Dedicated Wet Wells to Protect Properties from Flooding Install dedicated manholes to provide a dedicated location for portable pumps to be dropped in during extreme weather events. Portable pumps will pump flood waters over to permanent pump station. Concept design has been undertaken, review underway.
