Catchment Projects: Darley Drain
Category 1 Projects
Projects Council has committed to complete by July 2024.
Project Name | Description | Update |
Grate Over Beach Road Culvert from Pensioner Flats | Prevent blockages of downstream pipe network, large mesh/slotted grate to prevent large debris from entering piped network. | This project is now complete. |
12 Jenkinson Street | Upstream Grate in the stream blocks causing flooding. | This project is now complete. |
Category 2 Projects
Projects Council has committed to progressing to detailed design.
Project Name | Description | Update |
Ownership & Maintenance of Drains Upstream of Jenkinson St | Establish ownership and clear drains of overgrown weeds and debris. | We are in discussions with property owners regarding clearance of the Jenkinson Street drain. A contractor has been engaged to do some tidy up work along Councils section of this creek to remove pest plants and anything that will drop leaves. Tidy up work is now complete and Council will continue to work with landowners regarding clearing of the drain on private property. |
Darley Drain Outlet Improvements - Retaining Wall Renewal | Renewal of the retaining wall at the Darley Drain outlet. Investigate possible flap gate at Darley Drain. | Design underway for repair to the retaining wall at the outlet of Darley Drain. |
Category 3 Projects
Projects Council are considering for this catchment. A consultant has been engaged to undertake modelling for the following projects.
Project Name | Description | Update |
Improved Overland Flow Jenkinson Street | Improve overland flow from upper catchment open drain of Jenkinson Street. | Council has completed stormwater modelling. The modelling has indicated that improving the overland flow through this catchment will have very little impact on the overall flooding to dwellings and properties. Council will therefore not be progressing with this project further at this stage as other projects are expected to have a bigger and wider benefit. |
Fyfe Road Pond Improvements | Investigate existing attenuation devices on Fyfe Road and Beach Road. | Council has completed the initial stormwater modelling for this project which has indicated increasing the size of the pond will provide some immediate flood relief downstream during high frequency rainfall events. This project will now progress to concept design. |
Right angle in Wallnutt Ave/Marine Ave Pipe | Improve flow/hydraulics in the Darley Drain catchment. | Modelling which looked at the benefit of removing the right angle from this pipe, has been completed. This showed no benefit at this stage and so this project will not progress any further. The project will be re-looked at following Darley Drain upgrade. |
Darley Drain Upper Catchment Attenuation | Investigate safe methods of attenuation to protect Darley Drain catchment properties. | Modelling that looked at adding attenuation the the upper catchment, has been completed. This showed some benefit in reducing the extent of flooding downstream. This project will now progress to concept design stage. |
Maranui Catchment Re-Diversion | Diverting flows from Maranui Estate towards Two Mile Creek. This project is dependent on upper catchment attenuation of Two Mile Creek to provide additional capacity within Two Mile Creek. | Modelling that looked at adding re-diverting stormwater from the Maranui estate towards Two Mile Creek, has been completed. This showed some benefit in reducing the extent of flooding downstream. The project will need to be considered further in conjunction with the Two Mile Creek catchment before it is progressed to concept design stage. |
New Pipe - Wallnutt Ave | New pipe down Wallnutt. Explore possibility of extending down Ocean View Road direct to the Darley Drain outlet, also address restrictions of existing Wallnutt Ave pipe. | Modelling that looked at adding a second pipe at Wallnutt Ave, has been completed. This showed some benefit in reducing the extent of flooding and the project will now progress to concept design stage. |
Darley Drain Outlet Improvements - Second Outlet | Assess feasibility of a second outlet on the performance of the Darley Drain catchment. | Modelling that looked at improving the capacity of the Darley Drain outlet, has been completed. This showed some benefit in reducing the extent of flooding and the project will now progress to concept design stage. |
Pump Station at Wallnutt Ave | Investigate the feasibility of a pump station in the Darley Drain catchment, to reduce the effects of flooding in the Wallnutt and Marine Ave area. Could be pumped to Brighton Reserve. | Modelling to add a pump station within the Darley drain catchment, has been completed. The modelling indicates a very large pump will be required. This project will progress to concept design stage and will be considered in conjunction with other projects for this catchment to ensure it is feasible. |
Pipe the Beach Road to Marine Ave Boardwalk Drain | Assess and implement options to improve performance of the boardwalk drain. | Modelling indicates that this boardwalk can be piped with no adverse effects. Project will progress to design. |
