Step 3 - Verification of your food business
What is a verification?
A verification is a semi-formal meeting where you demonstrate how the business is complying with the requirements of the Food Act Programme or Plan you are registered under. It will involve a mixture of questions from the verifier, requests to demonstrate food safety practices, auditing of related records and also a 'reality check' of the premises.
Verification Outcomes Explained
Who will audit or inspect my food business?
All premises that operate with a template food control plan will be verified/audited by their local Council. If you operate under a national programme you are required to choose your verifier.
Verifiers are qualified professionals who will visit your business to check you are selling safe and suitable food. A list of all recognised agencies can be found on MPI's website: http://www.foodsafety.govt.nz/registers-lists/food...
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council (WBOPDC) is a recognised agency to undertake food safety audits for national programmes 1, 2 and 3. Under the recognised agency status, food safety audits can be undertaken outside of the Western Bay District.
Requests for verification for some National Programmes business may not be able to be undertaken. This will apply where your business is not a sector that Council or Council’s verifier is accredited to check. There also may be constraints due to volumes of work. Please check if your business may be affected. In these circumstances we will put you in touch with alternative providers.
A list of all approved verifiers is available.
