What changes we can expect
In 2019 the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BOPRC) commissioned NIWA to analyse the climate change projections and impacts from the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report* specifically for the Bay of Plenty Region. This can be found on their climate change website alongside other information relating to climate change in the Bay of Plenty. The analysis indicates that, as temperatures rise over time, we are likely to see more extreme and unpredictable weather events in the Bay of Plenty.
The findings from the technical report have been published by BOPRC as an interactive mapping tool. You can navigate around the region to see how the weather in a particular area is likely to be impacted, and how increased or decreased efforts to reduce emissions could affect the changes.
*The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report was released in 2022 and NIWA completed updates to the national climate projections in mid 2024. The Ministry for the Environment will be publishing a map-based geospatial tool to display the climate projections data as well as insights into the data in the near future. You can read more about this work on MfE’s website.
