Motorcycle Safety
Hundreds of motorcycle riders enjoy Western Bay roads every year, particularly in spring and summer and we want to ensure they have a safe journey.
Motorcyclists in New Zealand are at a much greater risk of road accidents leading to injury than are other road users.
Around New Zealand, motorcyclists are on average 19 times more likely to suffer a serious or fatal injury travelling the same distance as a car driver.
A key focus on the national safer journeys action plan is to make motorcycling safer. With assistance from our partners, including NZTA, we work hard to promote road safety messages and want to get feedback from riders about their perceptions of the safety of Western Bay’s local roads.
Motorcycle safety
In 2017 the Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (MSAC) commissioned OPUS researchers to combine crash data from road safety agencies including ACC, Police, MOT and NZTA and, for the first time, include hospital data. As well as sharing the research findings with road safety agencies, MSAC put it in to an accessible format to help educate riders on risks.
