Free scam seminar aims to keep people ‘cyber safe’
A growing number of online scams has prompted a free cybersecurity event in Te Puke to raise awareness and arm people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves.
Cyber Security Awareness: Scam and Fraud Seminar, a scam and fraud seminar hosted by Western Bay of Plenty District Council, in collaboration with Tū Mai Digital, is being held at the Settlers Lounge in Te Puke on Thursday 20 March, from 10am until 12 noon.
Guest speakers include IT specialists, bank managers and private contractors, who will give easy-to-follow presentations on cybersecurity awareness, banking, investment and romance scams, credential harvesting, passwords and fraud.
Following the presentations, there will be light refreshments and the opportunity to meet the experts and ask questions.
“There is an increasing need for cybersecurity awareness within our communities,” says Tracy Silver, Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s Community Digital Support Assistant.
“Scammers have always been with us, but they are becoming more sophisticated. Although we can’t stop them, there are things we can do to protect ourselves. Regular refresher courses like this one can help you stay on top of the latest scamming tactics.”
Similar events in Katikati and Ōmokoroa have proved popular with up to 60 people attending. While it is a free event, people are encouraged to register to give an indication of numbers.
Tickets are available from eventbrite.co.nz, or at the Te Puke Library and Service Centre, where Council staff can help you to register.
