Roading rate may increase for some properties
Properties in commercial/industrial and post-harvest zones in the Western Bay may have to contribute a bigger share to road maintenance costs in the future.
All properties in the District contribute to road-related expenses, but the proportion, or ‘differential’, they pay depends on the zone they are located in.
In its Long Term Plan 2024-2034, which is open for consultation until 17 June, Western Bay of Plenty Council is proposing increasing the roading rate differential for commercial/industrial and post-harvest zones from 2.0 to 4.0.
“The proposed increase is based on the assumption that properties in these zones are more likely to rely on heavy traffic use, which has a greater impact on the roading network,” says Adele Henderson, Council’s General Manager Corporate Services.
“We think increasing the differential for these zones is more equitable and will mean that other zones will pay less overall towards roading rates.”
Alternative options outlined in the Long Term Plan are to increase the roading rate differential for commercial/industrial and post-harvest zoned properties to 3.0, or to leave it at 2.0.
"Our preferred option aims to distribute road maintenance costs based on the areas where there is more strain and wear on the network. We invite residents and businesses to take part in the kōrero and provide their feedback to ensure we make the best decision for our District’s future," says Adele.
