Matariki is a time to gather with whānau and friends to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. Have a look below at some events being held in our District.

Libraries and Service Centres

All libraries and service centres will be closed on Friday 14 July. You can still reach us via our online form here, via Antenno or on 0800 926 732.

Kerbside and Recycling Centres

Kerbside collections remain unchanged. Please use our address finder if you aren't sure when your bin day is here.

All recycling centres will be closed on Friday but open on their usual days. You can find their timetables here.

Events in our District

Matariki Community Dawn Viewing & Breakfast, Waihī Beach

  • Thursday 20 July, 6am
  • The land adjacent to the Adela Stewart Drive Recreation Reserve, Athenree. Located at the far end of Adela Stewart West Drive, parking will be available on Adele Stewart Drive Recreation Reserve.

The community is invited to come together for a Matariki dawn viewing on the land adjacent to the Adela Stewart Drive Recreation Reserve, Athenree. The dawn viewing will be followed by a free community breakfast.

Exhibition: Matariki Raranga Toi

  • The Carlton Gallery, The Arts Junction,36 Main Road, Katikati 3129, Katikati
  • Monday 3 July 2023 – Sunday 16 July 2023

The latest exhibition in the Carlton Gallery, nestled within The Arts Junction in Katikati, coincides with Matariki and celebrates both art and the start of a new year for Māori. Visitors to this unique exhibition will be treated to a fine exhibition of hand-woven harakeke (flax) artworks with kete (traditional basket), pōtae (hat), backpacks, and more on display.

Matariki Star Lantern Workshop

  • The Arts Junction, 36 Main Road, Katikati
  • Thursday 6 July 2023 6:00pm and Friday 7 July 2023 10:00am
  • Ages 12+

Brought to you by Katch Katikati, make a 3D star lantern for the Matariki Celebration.

Celebrating Matariki

Join us for a complimentary breakfast scone & hot drink. Enjoy the Matariki lanterns made by local school groups
Optional park and ride a bus from Katikati Primary School carpark at 5.15am (as there is limited parking at the end of Park Rd).

Te Kete Matariki

  • Friday 14 July, 10am - 4pm
  • Jubilee Park, Te Puke - traffic management will be in place all around Jubilee Park.

Tangata whenua and the Community of Te Puke proudly present ‘Te Kete Matariki’ a Community event. We're so excited for Te Kete Matariki - Te Puke 2023 and everything great that it brings to our people the hapori of Te Puke. Like always expect an amazing day of fun, whānau, food and whakangahau lead by tangata whenua!

Matariki Disco

  • Saturday, 8 July from 5pm - 7:30pm
  • Te Puke Memorial Hall
  • Ages 14 and under, $5 per child
  • Te Puke Scouts Fundraiser

Celebrate Matariki while supporting your local Scout group and join us for an evening of brightly coloured Starry Night FUN! Boogie on down with the Te Puke Scout and EPIC teams at our Matariki Disco Fundraiser and learn some new dance moves, compete in a dance off, play games, win spot prizes and MORE!

Matariki Storytime & Raranga Weaving

  • Te Puke Library - in the Children’s Area
  • Thursday 13 July from 10.30am
  • Everyone welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • No bookings required

Come at 10.30am to hear stories about the stars and celebrate Matariki with local storyteller Te Whetu. Then, from 11.45am - 1.45pm, we will have Raranga Weaving workshops with Kirikowhai Stevens linking the past, present and future.
