It’s all in the name for new recycling trailers
The people have spoken!
The two names for Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s recycling trailers are ‘Recyclosaurus Rex’ and ‘Sustainabox’.
The names were submitted via Council’s mobile recycling trailer naming competition and were shortlisted by the Council team before a vote on social media made the final call.
Sustainabox was submitted by community member David Garcia; and Recyclosaurus Rex was the brainchild of Judy Clark who worked in Council’s kerbside rubbish and recycling project team.
The two names will have pride of place on the mobile recycling trailers, which were acquired primarily for the rural community who don’t receive kerbside recycling services.
Council’s Resource Recovery and Waste Team Leader, Ilze Kruis says these new recycling trailers are community assets, so it’s only right to have them pick the names.
“We’re really excited to rollout the mobile recycling service. It’s a great way for us to get out into our communities and help them to make a real difference with their waste minimisation efforts, while making their lives a bit easier.
“People want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling, but it’s much harder when you live in a rural corner of the Western Bay. If you can’t yet access kerbside recycling, you have to drive your recycling to a community recycling centre (at Te Puke, Katikati, Athenree), or to a transfer station in Te Maunga, or Waihi. These trailers bring the recycling centre much closer to those people.”
Trailers will be available for dropping off recyclable materials such as glass, paper, cardboard, tins, cans and clean plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5. They’ll be taken to rural locations for a rostered period of time, determined by the preferences shared in a recent survey of would-be users.
The community can drop their recycling into the trailers when they’re in the neighbourhood. And a Council team member will be on hand to help everyone with their recycling and ensure materials go into the right slot.
David Garcia says he knew Sustainabox was a great name when it first came to him.
“I am stoked that 'Sustainabox' was chosen! Looking forward to seeing the box roaming the Western Bay countryside helping to keep Aotearoa clean and green.”
Council agreed to explore alternative recycling options for our rural communities through the Long Term Plan 2021-31.
The custom-built mobile trailers were funded through the Waste Minimisation Fund with support from the Glass Packaging Forum.
