Final stop for Waihī Beach’s extra summer kerbside collections
A busy first summer of extra kerbside collections in the Waihī Beach area is being hailed a success.
Monday 31 January is the final stop on Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s six week extra summer kerbside collection service to cater for the popular holiday hot spots of Waihī Beach, Athenree and Bowentown.
The three areas have had added recycling, rubbish and food waste collections in efforts to help communities keep up their waste minimisation efforts, even with an influx of holidaymakers and guests.
Council Deputy CEO and Group Manager Infrastructure Services, Gary Allis says, the extra kerbside collections for holiday hot spots around Waihī Beach have been a great success this summer.
Residents and visitors to Waihī Beach, Athenree and Bowentown have done great work continuing their challenge to minimise waste and have made great use of extra summer kerbside collections.
“We’re really proud of how our communities have welcomed visitors and showed them how we serious we are about minimising waste sent to landfill. Now, many of our visitors have gone and we need to get back to our single kerbside collection on Mondays, with glass and mixed recycling alternating.”
The last special summer kerbside collection is on 31 January (Auckland Anniversary Day), and the schedule will return to normal on 7 February (Waitangi Day). To cater for any overflow recycling on the public holidays the Athenree Recycling Centre will open both holiday Mondays from 10am-4pm.
The below collection and services will run over the upcoming public holidays

“And don’t forget you can now add common #5 plastics to your recycling bin.
“We’re already getting close to our goal of diverting 1800 tonnes of waste from landfill and doing it quicker than we predicted. We just need to keep up the good work and set a really ambitious goal for the 2022/23 year.”
