Western residents switching to water meters
Water meter installation and connections in Katikati, Waihi Beach and surrounding rural areas is well underway, with customers whose water meters were installed since 1 July 2016 switching to paying for water by meter. This consists of a lower uniform annual charge (UAC) than previously for the water supply and $1.30 (including GST) for every cubic metre (1000 litres) of water used.
Water meters allow residents to manage their water consumption more effectively. Customers who use water responsibly are rewarded for this. Council's aim is to encourage the sustainable use of water throughout the District so the supply of water continues to meet demand as the Western Bay grows.
Letters are being sent to metered households explaining the new system. Water meters are read every six months, with the first reading for new metered customers taking place in August / September and payments due in September / October.
Residents without installed water meters will continue to pay for water through an annual charge only, until 30 June 2018, when the entire District will be metered.
People with questions on how the water meter system works are encouraged to contact Council on 5718008 or 0800 926732 for assistance.
