OMOKOROA

Western Bay of Plenty District Council staff are continuing to monitor Omokoroa daily.

Land is still moving at various sites where major slips have occurred in the last two weeks. A few more minor slips have also occurred in new locations over the long weekend, including Council reserve near the Omokoroa Bowling Club and a small walkway at Waterview Terrace.

Council staff are asking residents to stay clear of all slip sites and continue to monitor their land for signs of movement if they are concerned.

Currently, five properties remain evacuated.

A section of Harbour View Rd remains closed as a safety precaution. There is one property in this area which has been evacuated.

The Ruamoana Walkway is also closed.

People are reminded not to walk or travel through any cordoned off areas. They are closed for important safety reasons.

Kauri Point

Vehicle access to the Kauri Point boat ramp and jetty is closed due to a large slip that occurred during Cyclone Cook last week.

A 20 metre slip near the end of Chelmsford Street has resulted in partial loss of the road, which could take an estimated eight or more months to repair.

Until then, the road is closed at its intersection with Kyber Pass.

Council's Reserves and Facilities Manager, Peter Watson, says the nature of the slip and resulting damage mean it's not an easy fix.

Staff must first determine the best way to repair damage, then source funding and obtain all necessary consents prior to completing the work required.

The public is asked to stay away from the cordoned off slip site as there are tension cracks in the road, which suggest there could be further slips as the land settles, says Peter.

Pedestrian access to the jetty, public toilets and boat ramp is available via a separate walking track at the end of Kyber Pass.

Peter acknowledges regular users of the boat ramp will be inconvenienced. However, boat launching is available nearby at Ongare Point and Tanners Point.
