SH36 down to one lane following slip
There has been a large slip to the side of State Highway 36/Pyes Pa Road, near the intersection of Oropi Gorge Road. The slip, around 50m in length, has fallen down the hill to bush and farmland below, leaving a vertical bank 10-15m high.
As a precautionary measure, the road has been reduced to one lane with a 30km/h speed restriction in place until a longer term solution is confirmed. Motorists are being asked to drive safely through the site and follow temporary traffic signage.
Geotechnical engineers and maintenance crews have been monitoring the site since the slip occurred. The initial site inspection is complete and engineers will now begin investigating a long term solution.
"We are working as quickly as possible to keep the site safe and minimise inconvenience to road users," says NZ Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty Systems Manager, Jack Hansby.
