Western Bay of Plenty District Council has awarded the tender to construct three bridges on the Omokoroa Cycleway to HEB Construction Limited.
The $1.8 million contract will provide critical links across the estuary and wetlands the cycleway follows between Omokoroa and Te Puna.
The first bridge connects the Omokoroa Peninsula to Plummers Point, the second is within the Jess Road wetland, and the third will connect the end of Jess Road to the unformed end of Newnham Road - built on the harbour side of the railway bridge.
Council's Group Manager Infrastructure Services Gary Allis says HEB Construction has the resources and experience to undertake large bridge construction works within the Tauranga Harbour aquatic environment.
Furthermore, as the bridges are within the KiwiRail corridor, their design and methodology require approval by KiwiRail.
"HEB's experience in bridge construction and rail network requirements further qualifies the company for this work within the rail corridor,'' says Gary.
Recent HEB projects include The Strand Tidal Stairs in Tauranga City, Sulphur Point Marine Precinct works and the Omokoroa/Opureora Ferry Ramp upgrade.
The three-bridge project is part of the overall Omokoroa to Tauranga cycleway and is jointly funded by Council's cycleway budget; the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) urban cycleway programme; NZTA subsidy; the New Zealand Community Trust and PowerCo.
The Omokoroa to Tauranga cycleway is due to be completed by 30 June 2018.
