Kerbside Collective bin deliveries nearly complete
The delivery of more than 62,000 bins for Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s new kerbside waste and recycling collections is nearly complete.
The last of the rubbish, recycling, glass and food scraps bins are being delivered this week, following a District-wide rollout which began in May.
More than 17,000 eligible households have received new bins ahead of the first collections beginning Thursday, 1 July.
Council’s Deputy CEO and Group Manager Infrastructure Services, Gary Allis there is still a small number deliveries being made but thanks the community for their patience during the bin deliveries.
If any residents did not receive a set of bins please ring 0800 926 732 or email kerbside@westernbay.govt.nz
The new rates-funded service is designed to increase the amount of material diverted from landfill by about 60 percent – around 1800 tonnes a year. On average each household District-wide produces about 640kg of waste per year.
Gary says waste management has become a growing concern for councils and their communities and it is the right time to make a change from private contracting of rubbish collection to a Council-contracted service.
“A rates-funded recycling system makes it easier for all households to participate in waste reduction, resulting in less household waste going to landfill, as proven by other councils who have succesfully adopted this system.
“This is a change which may be confronting to some, but it will make a significant difference in preserving the Western Bay for future generations.”
The cost of the kerbside recycling services will be charged through an annual targeted rate. The full service cost is $149 and households receive mixed recycling, glass and food scraps collections. The partial service cost is $98 for recycling and glass collections, but no food scraps collection. The $3.95 pay per pick-up for general rubbish is additional.
The $3.95 per pick-up for general rubbish is a cost only charged when people attach a pre-paid pay-as-you-throw tag to their red lid rubbish bin. This service is available each week.
Pay-as-you-throw tags can now be purchased from Council’s library and service centres and other retailers. For a full list visit www.kerbsidecollective.co.nz/payt
Gary reminds Katikati and Aongatete and Maketu, Paengaroa, Pongakawa and Pukehina residents that there will be changes in their collection days from 1 July.
Council’s new collection day schedule sees Katikati and Aongatete and Maketu, Paengaroa, Pongakawa and Pukehina swap collection days – Katikati and Aongatete moves from Friday to Tuesday and Maketu, Paengaroa, Pongakawa and Pukehina from Tuesday to Friday. The rest of the District’s collection days remain mostly the same with some minor changes.
If unsure of a collection day for the new service, residents can find their collection day printed on the side of their red lid rubbish bin or yellow lid recycling bin.
Residents will also find an information brochure and 12-month collection calendar inside their blue glass crate or food scraps bin. The collection calendar shows households when their first collection for each bin will be in July, as well as timings for all collections for the next 12 months.
