Take your lunch outside for Get Outdoors Week
Dust off your sun hat and embrace the fresh air - because it’s Get Outdoors Week.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council is challenging everyone to take a nature break and get outdoors every day this week.
The theme for Get Outdoors Week in 2022 is accessibility, highlighting activities for all ages and abilities.
We all know that going outside and being in nature is good for your well-being. So this year, we encourage you to pack your lunch and head out for some fresh air.
We’re providing the inspiration, revealing our top five places in the Western Bay to enjoy a packed lunch outdoors. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, as we reveal a new lunch spot each day.
The best bit – we’ve picked wicked places that are close to car parks, have flat terrain, and provide easy access to nature.
Council’s Reserves and Facilities Manager, Peter Watson says having a packed lunch outside is something that everyone can enjoy.
“We can’t ignore that some people have more barriers to getting outside, and that not all of our facilities work well for everybody. But this Get Outdoors Week we want to celebrate what’s on offer to everyone.”
Get Outdoors Week is supported by Council as it encourages our people to use the safe places we create and care for on their behalf.
Peter says, “Cycleways, footpaths, parks and reserves help people to feel like they belong in their communities and provide a place to connect and stay active.
“Your wellbeing is important to us. And we’re committed to creating supportive environments that make it easy for you to take a little nature break every day.”
Council parks and reserves portfolio currently consists of 222 reserves, 30 playgrounds, 44 hard courts, six skate parks, 19 boat ramps and many kilometres of walking and cycling trails.
And just this year Council has adopted a new District-wide policy to consider accessibility requirements for a range of users, including those in wheelchairs, when developing new concept plans for reserves or planning restorations or upgrades of playgrounds.
Council is working on new ways to support you and create environments that increase your overall wellbeing. Initiatives like Get Outdoors Week are just one part of our plan to care for our communities and create positive change.
