Chance to check in on all things Ōmokoroa
Got a question about the Ōmokoroa Domain upgrade, the State Highway 2 intersection, Prole Road upgrade or Ōmokoroa Stormwater Catchment Management plan? Come along to our next community update.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s latest Ōmokoroa Peninsula Projects community update is on Thursday 26 May from 5pm to 7pm at the Ōmokoroa Pavilion, Social Room at 28 Western Avenue, Ōmokoroa.
Engineering and Special Projects Manager, Raj Sumeran says there is plenty to kōrero with staff on, existing projects or those about to begin.
“While many things slow down over winter, we have plenty going on across the peninsula, and we’re keen to talk to residents about what’s happening.
“We’ll be sharing updates on projects currently underway and new projects in their final design stages – including an extension to Heartwood Avenue, and the walkway/cycleway bridge connecting Heartwood Avenue to Tui Glen which are both ready to be looked over by the community.”
Raj says he’ll also be looking to get the community’s thoughts on the final design to upgrade Prole Road to an urban standard with a wide road, footpaths, modern street lighting and landscaping.
Excitingly, Council’s application for $38 million to upgrade to the intersection of State Highway 2 and Ōmokoroa Road has progressed to the negotiation stage of the Kāinga Ora Infrastructure Acceleration Fund. Council’s roading team will be on hand to talk about what this means, and what the future design might look like.
Stormwater is also on the agenda, as Council’s engineers look to review the way stormwater will be managed through some areas with water sensitive urban design that includes more grass, swales and planting to increase the quality of stormwater being discharged.
Council team members will also be on hand to talk to about parks and reserves, housing legislation and planning changes and more.
Specific projects will include:
- Roading and infrastructure projects
- Recreation and reserve projects
- Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF) proposal - State Highway 2 Ōmokoroa intersection
- Ōmokoroa Structure Plan and draft residential rules
- Changes to housing rules (Medium Density Residential Standards)
- Stormwater Catchment Management Plan

About the Ōmokoroa Peninsula Projects
It is estimated that by 2050, the Ōmokoroa peninsula will be fully developed and home to 12,000 residents. To cater for this significant growth and the need for continuing improvements to the peninsula’s infrastructure, Council is undertaking a series of projects – roading, reserves, cycleways, stormwater, building and planning – between now and 2022.
Overall, there are more than 15 Council-initiated projects, along with private development, and which includes collaboration with tangata whenua, Pirirākau hapū; the Ministry of Education; and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. The total projects are estimated to cost $50 million, of which $14 million is co-funded by the Government under its Shovel Ready Infrastructure Programme.
