Kerbside collections change on Good Friday
All kerbside collections that normally take place on Friday 15 April, will shift to Saturday 16 April over the Easter Weekend.
The areas impacted will be parts of Te Puke, Maketu, Paengaroa, Pongakawa and Pukehina. Collections take place as per the normal fortnightly schedule so check whether that includes your yellow lid mixed recycling bin or glass crate, and your red lid rubbish bin if you wish.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council Deputy CEO and Group Manager Infrastructure, Gary Allis says that while the day of collection will change, the service won’t.
“Please carry on putting your bins out as normal, but do it on Saturday morning by 7am to ensure you’re not missed.
“We apologise for the interruption during a time that is already unsettled with food scraps collections currently on pause. Our community have been very adaptable and understanding, and we really appreciate it.
This will be the first collection since glass crates were added back to the schedule, so everyone who has extra glass – please remember that contractors can’t take over filled crates – level with the crate lip is the most that can be collected at once. And extra bins or glass placed on the kerbside alongside the Council-approved crate won’t be collected, so please keep feeding it into your glass recycling as you can or take it to the recycling centre.
For those who may have trouble remembering the collection day change, Gary has a tip.
“Now is a great time to sign up for our free reminder service via the Antenno app. We’ll send a reminder to your phone to put your bins out the night before, and share any changes to the service – like this one – so you don’t get caught out.”
There are no other changes to any other day in the kerbside collections during easter ANZAC weekends.
Recycling centres
This year, the Athenree Recycling Centre will not open on Easter Monday 18 April and Anzac Day, Monday 25 April.
In years past Athenree Recycling Centre has specifically opened on Easter Monday to cater for holiday maker recycling. However the past nine months of kerbside collections in Waihī Beach and Athenree on Mondays (which continues as normal on 18 and 25 April) have reduced public holiday visitors at the recycling centre, and the special opening is no longer justified.
Kerbside is doing the job says Gary. “This is good news, it means our kerbside service is working for those who need it.
“Our recycling centres will continue to open on their normal days, but we don’t have the demand to open specifically on the upcoming Easter Monday or Anzac Day public holidays.”
COVID has affected the regular Athenree and Katikati Recycling Centre opening hours, so please check the current opening hours before visiting westernbay.govt.nz/recycling-centres
