Last steps on Katikati’s newest shared path

Planning for Katikati’s newest shared path is in its final stages, and we want to know, are we on the right path?
The 1.2km shared path from Yeoman Bridge to Park Road Reserve promises to be a much-loved inclusion to the trail network around Katikati once completed in 2022.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council Reserves and Facilities Manager Peter Watson says, “Our plans for the new shared path include a concrete surface that’s mobility scooter and wheelchair friendly as the existing grass walkway through to Park Road Reserve tends to get soggy in winter. It’s also a much nicer surface for families whose youngest cyclists are still in training.
“Our plans are almost ready – we just need to finalise the route and find out whether the community prefer a standard white concrete path, or a tinted, less reflective option.”
This project is part of a series of improvements to the trail network in that part of Katikati, included in the Katikati-Waihī Beach Reserve Management Plan and Council’s Walking and Cycling Action Plan.
Peter says “This new shared path would link Park Road Reserve to the recently completed Yeoman Bridge and existing Uretara Trail shared path, allowing cyclists and walkers to get a step further around the peninsula.
“We’re lucky to have some really beautiful paths around Katikati. Our long-term goal is to connect them and complete a network of safer off-road trails going around and through Katikati.”
This shared path brings that vision one small but important step closer.
While the trail has been approved through the Katikati-Waihī Beach Reserve Management Plan (2018), it’s important that we seek the wider community’s thoughts one last time prior to the construction phase, so we get the path right.
“This trail is for all of the community to use, and we need to get it right and to ensure it gets a lot of use.”
