Mayor's Christmas Message

Kia ora, as we head into the festive season, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a very special Christmas and happy 2022.

Each year I'm amazed at the collective resilience and compassion shown right across our Western Bay community to help each other out.

Whether a smile, a simple conversation to check in on a friend or neighbour or a helping hand with a project, something so small and simple often has the biggest impact.

This year has been a difficult one for us all navigating the ripple effects of another Covid-19 dominated year grief, stress, financial difficulties, job losses and isolation caused by the pandemic.

This year sees no Christmas parades across the district, and large events have been cancelled or postponed. While this is a different kind of season to be jolly, we all need to adapt to how things are and take care of ourselves and each other.

For me the biblical saying "To break bread with others" comes to mind.

These are uncharted and emotionally charged times and so Christmas is a time to show compassion and kindness towards others, an occasion that should foster meaningful connection and cooperation with others.

Let's not lose sight of the meaning of Christmas and the generosity, friendship and pride that makes the Western Bay such a special place to live.

As you all go about your festivities over the next weeks, please think of your whanau, friends and community with a kind and caring heart.
