Western Bay community facilities to close as COVID-19 precaution
All Western Bay of Plenty District Council libraries, service centres, swimming pools and recycling centres across the District will close later today.
Council made the announcement this morning to support the Government’s efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many of our facilities include communal spaces with people in close contact. While they are important hubs across our District our community and our country’s health must come first,” says Council CEO Miriam Taris.
As a result, the following facilities will close at 5pm today, Monday 23 March.
- Barkes Corner Service Centre
- The Centre - Pātuki Manawa
- Omokoroa Library and Service Centre
- Te Puke Library and Service Centre
- Waihi Beach Library and Service Centre
- Dave Hume Swimming Pool (Katikati)
- Te Puke Memorial Pool
- Community Recycling and Greenwaste Centres – Katikati, Athenree, Omokoroa, Te Puke and the fortnightly rural recycling trial programme at BP Pongakawa
Council has been following Ministry of Health guidelines and other directive from central government to mitigate risks to Council services and staff from the pandemic.
To help do their bit, the public are advised not to return any library books currently issued. Any issued books will be extended (no overdues or fines).
All closures will be monitored and reassessed on an ongoing basis.
“At the present time we will continue to make calculated decisions to balance continuity of Council services with the safety of the public and minimisation of the spread of COVID-19,” explains Miriam.
