Park Road esplanade track upgrade starts
Closure of Katikati’s Beach Road/Park Road esplanade between Francis Drive Reserve and Park Road Reserve started this week and will extend for three weeks to enable work on upgrading the walkway/cycleway.
The upgrade will focus on the worst section of the existing walkway between Park Road Reserve and Katikati’s town centre. Park Road Reserve is the large grassed area at the end of Park Road and Francis Drive Reserve is the large grassed area at the end of Irwin Court.
Signs and orange barrier fencing at each end of the construction zone define where access is closed. Walkway users are asked to use the road footpath network during the construction period via Park Road, Francis Drive and Irwin Court.
The upgrade, which involves a 100-metre section of track that will be widened from 1.2m to 2.5m wide and includes timber retaining walls, will result in a gentler track gradient.
“This will be far more user-friendly for people who are less agile and it will also make the track safer for people pushing buggies or using wheelchairs, cycles or mobility scooters,” says Council’s Reserves and Facilities Manager, Peter Watson.
“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience during the closure.”
