Storm damage closes Waitui Reserve boardwalk

The coastal staircase and boardwalk between Fairlie Grove and Waitui Reserve foreshore in Te Puna is closed, following damage from last week's storm.

The king tide and storm surge has further eroded some of the public walkway's supporting piles with one or two completely unsupported.

A structural engineer has inspected the walkway and advised Western Bay of Plenty District Council it is too dangerous to use.

The staircase and boardwalk links Matahiwi Road and Fairlie Grove. It may be closed for some months due to the assessment of repair costs, structural design and the consenting process.

Letters have been sent to local residents advising of the closure.
