Katikati has a very special day planned with a service at Memorial Square at 11am on 11 November to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war and the cessation of fighting.
The service is organised by Katikati RSA and the ceremony will feature the presentation and unveiling by the Walford family of a memorial clock in memory of a Russell Freeland Walford ex-Mounted Rifleman from Katikati who joined the Tank Core. Russell served in both Egypt and Italy during the Second World War. He was killed in action in Italy on 16 December 1943, aged 24.
The Walford family had the clock made a long time ago but never made it public until recently. The unveiling was organised by the RSA in conjunction with the Walford family - many of whom are coming to the commemoration service.
At Katikati's service, cadets from the New Zealand Navy, Army and Airforce will be undertaking the flag raising ceremony of both New Zealand and Australian flags.
Western Bay Museum in Katikati has an Armistice Day exhibition featuring 25 original art works by artists Geoffrey Fuller.
His works are a tribute to those who served in World War One. The illustrations were donated to Katikati Open-Air Art by Geoffrey's family and this is the first time they have been on public display.
Te Puke Citizens RSA: Service will be held under the flagpole at 11am, 11 November, followed by morning tea to which everyone is invited.
Waihi Beach RSA: Joining with Waihi RSA for service at 11azm in Waihi. Bus leaves for Waihi RSA from Waihi beach RSA at 10.30am for anyone wanting to hop on - free.
