Earthworks progress on Omokoroa walkway
Works to enable the reopening of the Ruamoana walkway in Omokoroa are underway.
The walkway has been closed since it was seriously damaged in the cyclone of 2017.
Remediation works are being trialled to stabilise the slips and the work is jointly funded by Western Bay of Plenty District Council and the owners of the adjacent properties to the cliff face.
Earthworks have been completed over the past two weeks to reshape the slip face and slope protection works with revegetation and drainage will now be undertaken.
Project Manager Peter Clark says it was critical to get the earthworks completed within this construction season.
"The area is still a construction site and must remain closed to the public until all works are complete,'' says Peter.
Some people continue to ignore the safety signs and are climbing over or through the safety fence putting themselves and the workers on site in a dangerous situation.
Resource consents for the work were obtained from Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council but initial tenders were declined due to being over budget.
The project has been redesigned and packaged into smaller components allowing work to proceed as weather permits. Drilling works are being renegotiated with a directional drilling contactor, and is expected to be finalised soon.
