We operate wastewater collection networks and treatment plants and ensure the discharges are appropriately treated returned safely to the environment.

What is wastewater?

Each time you flush the toilet, pull the plug from a sink, or have a shower, the wastewater drains into a sewer drain on your property.

It is made up of 'blackwater' from the toilet and 'greywater' which is household water from the shower, bath, basins and washing machine. With modified plumbing, greywater can be recycled to water landscape trees and plants.

Our goals in providing a public wastewater system

The main purpose of our wastewater systems is to protect the health of communities and the environment. It is important we provide services for present needs and to plan for growth as required.

We provide high-quality treatment and disposal systems which are efficient, environmentally acceptable and function in a controlled and regulated manner.

Where does it all go?

40% of residents are serviced by wastewater reticulation through more than 8000 connections
Wastewater travels from properties through large pipes to a wet well and on to treatment plants
Five wastewater plants (Waihī Beach, Katikati, Te Puke, Maketu, and a holding plant in Ōmokoroa)
Ōmokoroa's wastewater is collected and sent on to the Tauranga City Council treatment plant
Waihī Beach wastewater plant services Island View, Bowentown, Pio Shores and Athenree.
