Conservation Week Event Saturday 14th October

The Department of Conservation, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Western Bay District Council are joining forces with Youth Search and Rescue (YSAR) to do battle with pest plants.

The Orokawa Reserve is being invaded by wild ginger and climbing asparagus. In order to prevent these pest plants from taking over the Reserve YSAR will be carrying out a search and destroy' mission on Saturday 14th October.

YSAR teams will be sent into the bush to search for wild ginger and climbing asparagus. They will pull out smaller plants and gps tag larger plants for DOC to return to and destroy at a later date.

While this is happening, the community is invited to come along and learn about pest plants that threaten the area.

There will also be a weed swap' offered - locals can bring along a rubbish bag of pest plants * and swap it for a native plant. An extra native plant will be given for rubbish bags full of wild ginger and/or climbing asparagus!

When: Saturday 14th October.

Youth Search and Rescue event 8.30am to 5pm

Weed Swap 9.30 to 1pm

Where: Water Reserve car park - top of Ocean View Road

*native plants available while stocks last. Limited to 1 rubbish bag per person. Waihī Beach residents only. Pest plants only -lawn clippings not accepted.
