Two Mile Creek Erosion works update
Wednesday, 5 April
Erosion protection works at Waihi Beach's Two Mile Creek continue this week with contractors focusing on the area where the creek meets the ocean.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council wish to let residents know that contractors will cordon off a small area of the beach while work takes place.
Council Utilities Manager Kelvin Hill says the works will extend approximately 20 metres from the dune and involve the removal of sand from the construction site.
"The works involve the removal of some sand so the wall is deep enough that it can withstand whatever nature throws at it. The need for digging in is also because beaches fluctuate their sand levels naturally - which is more noticeable following severe weather events - and we need to take that into consideration."
Any sand that isn't returned to the site will be distributed further down the beach on dunes that were damaged during recent storms.
Depending on weather, works could take up to six weeks. Once settled the rock wall should stick out of the sand by around 40cm.
