Western Bay of Plenty District Council staff are continuing to monitor Kauri Point Historic Reserve after a number of new slips have been discovered.
Four new slip sites have been found following a site visit to Kauri Point Historic Reserve - adding to the existing slip which has closed vehicle access to the boat ramp and jetty.
Following last weekend's rainfall, the saturated ground has given way, taking out the walking tracks and has left highly unstable areas, therefore Council has closed the walking tracks through the bush area at Kauri Point Historic Reserve until further notice.
The walking tracks though the grassed area of the reserve are not affected and remain open for public use.
Council's Reserves and Facilities Manager, Peter Watson, says that parts of the tracks have disappeared into the harbour and the area near the cliff face is very unstable with tension cracks appearing.
Tension cracks suggest there could be further slips and as the reserve borders the harbour this poses a significant risk to reserve users. Because of this we've closed the walking tracks through the bush area until further notice, and put up fencing and signage warning people of the danger.
People are reminded not to walk or travel through any cordoned off areas. They are closed for safety reasons.
