Small leak in Katikati Outfall sewer pipe
Thursday 14 March
During recent testing on the Katikati Outfall sewer pipe, a small leak has been identified.
Here's what you need to know:
We are currently collaborating with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Toi Te Ora Public Health, and our iwi partners to locate and fix the leak.
To pinpoint the leak, we will be adding a dye to the treated effluent and using drones to conduct aerial surveillance. This operation is scheduled for next week - Tuesday and Wednesday (weather dependent).
During the operation, there will be boats and drones in the harbor, and the public may observe a green plume. Rest assured, the dye used is safe for the environment, and normal navigational rules apply around the boats.
While the wastewater has undergone ultraviolet light treatment, caution is advised. Warning signs have been installed at the water’s edge, advising against consuming shellfish or swimming until the issue is resolved.
Your safety and the protection of our environment remain our top priorities. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this process.
